✨ The Acanthia Repeating Pattern ✨
This pattern was inspired by a few things, actually!
Watch through to see it in different settings — bedding, dresses, teacups, wallpaper — & a little behind the scenes. Then tell me: which style do you prefer for this pattern? What suits it best? 💙
Inspiration:
Firstly, my sister-in-law is Greek. Linda married my brother Alan when I was 11, which inspired me to try and learn Greek (that didn’t go too well!). Mum even bought these really expensive cassette tapes with a special recorder back in the early 80s. I found it so difficult to learn — for me, anyway!
Linda’s parents had a deli in Darlinghurst, & I used to stay there & serve in their shop. I think that’s what first inspired me to one day have my own shop — which I did… six of them, actually! I’m cured now, lol. I paint food instead of selling it! I only just realised the connection while writing this. So, I had an early start in learning all things Greek. 😊
Secondly, when Mamma Mia came out, I absolutely loved it! Growing up in the 70s, I was the biggest ABBA fan and always wanted to be Agnetha (Anna) & marry Björn. I’d be there, singing into my hairbrush to every ABBA song. Anyway, back to the inspiration — in the movie, Sophie wears this white flowing blouse with blue embroidery down the neckline. I’ve searched for one like it ever since, but now I get to design my own pattern, print it on fabric, and make something similar myself — probably a dress.
Thirdly, my husband, daughters, & I travelled to Europe in 2015, and when we finally made it to Greece, it was everything I’d hoped for — inviting, warm, and full of friendly, kind people. The food was delicious, & the frappés… unforgettable! The inspiration for this type of pattern is endless — the colours, the style, the atmosphere — I just love it. Now that I’ve made one, I know I’ll make more. I mean, who doesn’t love this blue? 💙
