The Northern Rivers Hotel has always been more than just a pub — it’s a gathering place, a hub of community life, and a local landmark. After the devastating floods of 2022, the hotel’s future was uncertain, but the Durheim family stepped up to restore this much-loved establishment. Len and Julie Durheim originally purchased the hotel, and their son Tony, along with his grandson James, worked tirelessly to renovate and reinvigorate it. Today, the hotel thrives once again, with a welcoming beer garden, family-friendly spaces, and a vibrant atmosphere that locals have embraced wholeheartedly.
Laura Durheim, the current licensee, has been at the heart of this new chapter. As part of this three-generation family effort, she commissioned me to create an oil painting of the Northern Rivers Hotel, celebrating its resilience, charm, and the incredible work her family has done. Capturing the hotel on canvas was a wonderful opportunity to translate its character and energy into art — from the freshly painted walls to the lively, welcoming spaces that make it a true community treasure.
This painting is a celebration of both the hotel’s history and its exciting new chapter. Just as the Durheim family poured care and dedication into restoring the Northern Rivers Hotel, I’ve aimed to capture the spirit, pride, and warmth that make it such an iconic part of Lismore.
